A few years ago, my father-in-law passed and left behind a modest coin collection of random, but nice, items that had to be liquidated for the benefit of his heirs. (Some were interesting to me, but I'm not an heir).

At age 67, I've concluded that my children have no interest in coins either, and so I'm disposing of the few coins that I have left. I consigned my favorite coin to an auction that was held last month, and it was snapped up. I hope it was bought by a type coin collector, because you could hardly find a better, more affordable (relatively) version of this coin for type.

Why not just leave it to your kids for later unless you needed the cash? Inheriting it from you later may have piqued their interest.

I am sorry that your circumstances compelled you to sell such a nice, sentimental piece. I also hope it found a home in a collection that appreciaties it as much as you did.
