The date is not visible but can be inferred from the enhanced hair detail above the knot. Does anyone know if PCGS infers dates based on the hair/ribbon differences?

a TPG will still grade a coin with no date so long as its genuine. they will print the denomination and mint mark on the slab label, but the date field will be left blank or marked with a placeholder like N.D. for No Date. they will not assign the date based on markers

I own multiple straight graded coins which bear no evidence of a visible date, which PCGS has dated based on known types or die variations. I already know they will infer a date based on some die features, I'm just not sure what their rules are for inference and whether it will apply to this particular coin. I was hoping a PCGS expert could weigh in

They will assign no date coins based on markers - 1916 SLQ, T1 buffalos. I am not sure about this example.

i can see assigning a date for certain coins but do you have to request that when you send it in. I cant see them spending 2 min a coin and take time to look for possible markers

Yeah, it seems like you have to at least point them in the right direction and hope it is a quick and easy decision.
