Hi I just got finished buying some dollar coins from my bank and I got 2 1886 S Morgans I was shocked and happy to get them. I get home and turn it over and 1st thing I see it says COPY under IGWT. I weighed them and they came in at 18 grams and they are magnetic. So I guess my bank got swindled and they passed on fake coins to me? Is there any value or completely worthless I assume? So disappointed ><   |

Ugh,  , I know the feeling of that at times... Yes, these are unfortunately counterfeit/fake. So your bank definitely got swindled because they probably didn't know better themselves. Completely worthless, but at least you could show these off as a teaching opportunity to help others.  |

Yea. I just never thought a bank gets faked out. I assumed they have some kind of weight checker or something that sniffs them out. Good to know. Thank you for your response.

Buying Morgan dollars from a bank? Did you pay $1 for each. This seems quite strange. |

Yes I asked if they had any dollar coins and they had 7 I got for 7 bucks and these were 2 of them.

The other 5 were eisenhowers 2 1776-1976 and 3 regular 70's. I guess its not a big deal since I only lost 2 bucks on the transaction lol

These fakes actually look pretty good in terms of design accuracy. The reverses look like they were copied from 1878-S coins but otherwise they are well above average. If weight was OK and the "copy" stamp was omitted they would deceive most collectors, I think. I got this coin at a bank years ago. I was pretty excited for a minute or two, but like your coins the weight is low and it sticks to a magnet. No "copy" stamp, though! The E-clash reverse is a nice bonus. I don't think either of us should worry too much about being ripped off for a buck or two. It's worthwhile having a counterfeit in the collection, for educational purposes.   |

What a shameI wonder what metal they were made from being magnetic. Is it a strong mag attraction or a light one?

at least you did not purchase these online or somewhere else where you paid full retail for them. if they did not state copy, it would fool a lot of collectors
Jaobler, looking at 93S the surfaces really jump out to me. they have a strange grainy look to them
lesson learned...be careful purchasing coins from anyone other than a reputable company or person. there are good fakes out there that can fool even seasoned collectors.

You spent two dollars for two fake Morgan dollars—I call than a win!  You are going to get way more than two dollars worth of conversation and education from them.  And you got also five Ikes in the $7 deal.  |
