1845 Coronet Quarter Eagle (You Vs PCGS)

Nice coin!

Your coin is a slightly earlier die state of what eventually became a pretty badly broken reverse die. The metal movement through the stop between the final "A" of AMERICA and the denomination may be enough to call this a pre-cud ( Retained Cud).

I've seen a few of the 1845s over the years, and most have fairly flat strikes on the eagle's right leg (our visual left). Your coin has a very nice strike. The aggressive (and weird) die polishing on this date is another thing. How the mint managed to gouge the devices is a head-scratcher, but they sure did it. I like the luster and the overall appearance of your coin.

On the obverse, I see a decent edge hit above the head and between stars 5 and 6, a knock on the forehead, and a few dings on the cheek and chin. Most of the rest is the aggressive die polishing. On the reverse, I see a scratch between the back of the eagle's head and the left wing (our visual right), a diagonal scratch above the branch bur below the eagle's right wing (our visual left), and a small divot beneath the eagle's left wing (our visual right). There and a couple contact marks on the lettering, most noticeable on the second "T" of STATES and the denomination. Again, most of the rest is the very odd die polishing for this date. I can see some light rub, but no real evidence of circulation. To my eyes, there is enough chatter to hold this to MS-62, but I've seen similar coins slabbed as MS-63.

This is a tough coin in higher grades. I like this one. It's better than most.

Looks mint state, with enough hairline scratches (especially on the obverse) to limit maximum grade to MS-62. Or, a grading service might decide the hairlines indicate abrasive cleaning with a resulting MS Details grade.
Regardless, it's a very nice gold piece with good eye appeal.
