We had a really enjoyable first day of fishing. Caught 5 Bluefish and 4 Spanish Mackerel in a 6-hour trip mainly within Pamlico Sound.

The Captain tried to get us out into the blue water through Oregon Inlet but the wind had whipped up the waves where it was just too rough to go out there.

None of today's fish were very big, but all fought well and were great fun to catch. Here is my buddy Robbie with a typical Bluefish from the Sound. The mate told us these can get up to 30 pounds in the open ocean.

Going-Fishing---Checking-In-On-Occassion

For dinner tonight we grilled up the 4 Spanish Mackerel - delicious.

These are really impressive (and expensive) fishing boats. Today's was a custom 46 foot boat built specifically for blue water ocean fishing. Here I am after our day trip standing near a row of them at the marina:

The wind forecast for tomorrow is uncertain. We are booked on a charter for 8 hours of blue water ocean fishing. Captain says to meet him at the boat at 6AM and he'll decide what can be done.

I'm hoping for a calm sea and blue water fishing tomorrow.

Very cool! Yeah, I really like the Spanish mackerel. Hope you get to go out to the deep, I have never done that. Maybe pull in a sword or sail fish! Good luck!

We're back at our VRBO after a fantastic day of blue water fishing.

Met the boat at 6AM, still dark, and had a discussion with the Captain where he said the seas would lay down enough to get us offshore.

Here we are on the multi-million dollar custom sport fishing boat.

Going-Fishing---Checking-In-On-Occassion

The Captain powered us about 15 miles offshore where we trolled in the vicinity of an old WWII US Navy steel tower. Apparently there are many of these out there.

The towers provide structure for the fish, and so there is great fishing around them. A tower looks like this:

From the tower we trolled our way back in towards shore.

Fishing score for the day were 7 Albacore Tuna and 3 King Mackerel. We actually had a 4th King Mackerel nearly to the boat when a Barracuda made his supper from the back half.

These fish were fantastic fighters, great fun to catch them.

Here is our 'trophy shot' with fish by the tails

Tomorrow is our big day, depart at 5AM for a 12-hour trip ~40 miles offshore to the Gulf Stream. We have hopes of lots of big Tuna!

I'll check in with you later.

Is this a different fishing boat each day or the same one?
Great catch by the way.

Great catches. Do they fillet and freeze any of your catches so you can take home for your freezers?

We have 4 days of fishing Mike with all different boats. I figured that would give us a good sample of which Captain's we liked best if we come back next year.

This is really fun so far, and might become a Fall Fishing annual tradition, in addition to our Winter Hike annual tradition.

Fish cleaning is available, but I'm not aware of any freezing service.

We donated today's catch to the local food bank.

Tomorrow we're going for the deep water best eating Tuna, and I plan to take home as much as I can in my large Yeti cooler.

Where is our/your update?!? I've been living vicariously through you as to where you are and what you are doing, so always looking forward to your day in a fantastically beautiful place. Outer Banks time is different though, you should never get in a hurry about anything, so I'll wait patiently....

Well - I'm on Outer Banks vacation time. Hopefully the following big fish day will satisfy your curiosity!

Our Charter departed Wanchese at the very early hour of 5AM. The Captain powered the boat for ~2 hours until we reached ~40 miles off shore and into the Gulf Stream.

The Gulf Stream is where the big pelagic fish live.

It's simply amazing to feel & hear the power of these big boats. Ours had twin 700 Hp marine diesels. It looked like this over the stern as the daylight was breaking:

The Captain and Mate set out 8 serious poles baited for tuna. Within 5 minutes of the baits in the water we had a Blackfin tuna on a rod.

What a blast catching these fabulous fighting fish! It's about 5 to 10 minutes of pumping the rod up and reeling on the downstroke to get every one of these tuna to the boat for the Mate to gaff and bring onboard.

There is also plenty of quiet time waiting for the next strike. Here I am with my happy face look in the fighting chair, with the mate behind me keeping an eye open for fish.

There is plenty of company out here. We counted 17 boats in our small piece of the ocean. The mate said 'you should see it in the summer'.

Going-Fishing---Checking-In-On-Occassion

We had an absolutely amazing time catching these tuna - two times with both of us hooked up at the same time.

Here is my trophy shot back at the dock 12 hours later - 14 wonderful Blackfin tuna at maybe 15 to 20 pounds each.

Going-Fishing---Checking-In-On-Occassion

They are being cleaned and filleted by the fish cleaning service at the marina. Anyone want some fresh tuna?

To make an amazing day even better - we drove from the marina into Kill Devil Hills for oysters and beer at the local icon Awful Arthurs oyster bar.

Last day tomorrow - 6:30AM departure for a lot quieter day fishing for sea bass.

Did I mention I'm on an Outer Banks vacation?

Yeah, sorry, just excited for you and maybe me a little.... Thank you for doing all the posting while on island time, I know I and many others appreciate it. What a haul today, congrats! Never been out far enough to catch tuna, it sounds great! Good luck tomorrow and have a good rest of your vacation.

If for whatever reason you may have time, check out the gardens I mentioned earlier on your way out, I feel like you would appreciate them if you have not been before.
