I made a few acquisitions today at the Stack's auction of the Caine Collection of Obsolete Notes. Portions of that collection have been sold over the past several months on Stack's, so I already have several others from that collection. First is a note from the Exchange Bank in Helena. Exchange banks were private unchartered entities, as Arkansas had outlawed banks in in 1846 after the Panic of 1837. The enforcement of the laws was somewhat lax, and these private exchange banks operated openly and issued their own scrip. This particular note was printed on the back of Helena Insurance Company scrip. The next two are demand notes from the Bank of the State of Arkansas from the late 1830's, one each from the Fayetteville and Batesville branches. I already had the exact Fayetteville note, but it had been converted to a post note payable one year after issue (that modified redemption clause had been written by hand on the note). Finally is a note from the other state-chartered bank of the period, the Real Estate Bank of the State of Arkansas at its branch in Washington. This note is tattered and a remainder, but these are quite scarce so will serve as a hole-filler until I (hopefully) get a better example at some point. One aggravation is that the note is misattributed on the holder with the wrong bank name and wrong Haxby number (it should be 5-G92, not 10-G92). I have another note from this bank with the same mistakes made on the label, and it was also from the Caine Collection.

A couple of things I forgot to mention regarding the vignettes on a couple of the notes. Notice the central vignette on the Washington note is the same as the vignette to the left of the Batesville note, other than that one has been cropped a bit (you only see a portion of the griffin on that one). Also, I found it interesting the small vignette at the bottom of the Batesville note appears to be a poorly-drawn beaver.
As I've mentioned in previous posts, vignettes were frequently re-used by printers, and occasionally copied by other printers. In this case, both these notes were printed by the same New York printer.

A few notes I just received today - two municipal scrip and one merchant scrip. The first is a $2 note issued by The Corporation of the Town of Fayetteville in 1842. It is a Rothert plate note. Next is a note with the unusual denomination of one bit (12-1/2 cents) issued by The Corporation of Little Rock in 1841. Other municipal issues of Little Rock also used the one bit denomination, but this particular one is unlisted in Rothert. Last is a $2 note issued by the prominent banker and merchant W.B. (William Bruce) Sutton in Fort Smith. This is also a Rothert plate note.

A couple notes I just picked up on Heritage last night. First is $1 note from M. Mayers & Bro. of Fort Smith. I already have one of this Rothert number, 234-25, but with a different plate number. While this one is a bit lower numerical grade than my other one, it's in a comment-free holder (the other is not). This merchant had a large number of issues - Rothert lists 32 major varieties with many sub-varieties. The First National Bank of El Dorado, Arkansas, charter 7046, was one of two issuing charters in the town. El Dorado, located in southern Arkansas, is the county seat of Union County. The bank was chartered late in 1903 and merged and became part of Bancorp South in 2000. It issued 1902 RS/DB/PB and 1929 Type 1 and 2 notes, all in denominations of $10 and $20. While large size notes are tough to find, with only 4 Plain Back notes in the census, all the small size notes are a bit more common with between 9 and 11 examples of each denomination for both Type 1 and Type 2. This note is one of 11 $20 1929 Type 1 notes in the census, with all but one graded between VG and VF (the lone exception is listed as XF-AU). Signatures of cashier M.G. (Maxwell Gordon) Wade and president H.C. (Henry Crawford) McKinney.
