Are These Nickels Impaired Proofs? - Coin Community Forum

sich0015 Valued Member United States 255 Posts	Posted 04/17/2011 8:18 pm I have accumulated these from roll searching. For these years the proof coins either have no mintmark or there were S mints in circulation so I'm not positive if they are impaired proofs. Some of them are badly impaired but all of them still have sharper than normal rims and much more detail in the steps than I ever see in nickels from the 60s. There is definitely a mirror surface on the better ones too. What do you guys think, are any or all of these nickels impaired proofs? The steps and fields are pretty persuasive to me. It's tough to find steps like those in those years. The '61 is the only one I'm not sure about. In my opinion. Report this Post to the Staff

Jaobler Pillar of the Community United States 6399 Posts	Posted 04/17/2011 9:01 pm Based on luster and strike I'd guess coins 1, 3, 6, and 8 are proofs that were released into circulation. The 1965 nickel could be from one of those Special Mint Sets; at least, it looks stronger and more lustrous than a "normal" coin. It's obviously not a proof since none were minted from 1965 through 1967. Report this Post to the Staff
TNG Bedrock of the Community United States 10284 Posts	Posted 04/17/2011 9:11 pm The 1965 #4 looks to be a Special Mint Set cut loose. To me these look to be proofs going by step detail. These dates do not usually have this detail in the steps unless they are proof. The rim looks flat and squared off to me as well. #'s 1 5 6 7 and 8 look like proofs to me.
