I have just bought an 1893 half sovereign. when it arrived I thought there was something not right and I started looking at it more closely and noticed it doesn't have a milled edge although the size and weight are about right - it is very slightly lighter and very slightly smaller than my other half sovereigns. Is this a fake if it doesn't have a milled edge?

Slightly lighter, slightly smaller and milled edge missing - I'd say your coin is most likely genuine but has been given a good old-fashioned "clipping", either to fraudulently remove some gold shavings at government expense or in order to make the coin fit inside a bezel, pendant or mount of some kind.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
