Hi everyone Could anyone tell me what this coin/token I have found in my garage is? It is from Peter the Great's reign although I suspect it was made in the 70's. I can' find anything on the internet to help identify it. Anyone have a clue? Thanks.   |

I'm going to pass your coin image along to a friend of mine who's great at ID'ing Russian coins but what I can say offhand is that Peter The Great reigned from about 1682-1725. The date listed on your coin is his lifespan. Definitely looks Commemorative. Russia loves striking commem coins but you are right, there certainly is no information I can pull up. Not even ebay has one listed. That's a good sign. Like I mentioned earlier, I'll be sending your coin info over to a Russian coin friend of mine. If no one can figure it out before he can I'll post the response here. Edited by C_lake

It has to be a medal otherwise there should be a face value on it. It's still pretty neat.

I still havent heard back from my friend on this. I'll give him a call tomorrow to see if he's out of town. It's definitely a Commemorative medal. Peter The Great has quite a few made after his likeness. I can't seem to find out any information on it though. Curious.

the inscription on the reverse says: "С ПЕТЕР'УР"Ъ ОСНО'АНЪ ПЕТРОМЪ I 27 МАЯ 1703 "О"А" - "St. Petersburg was founded by Peter the Great on the May 23rd 1703" the fact the the letter "Ъ" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yer) is used at the end of the words may signify that the medal was made before 1917 revolution... |

It's likely just a souvenir medal from St.Petersburg,Russia.
Ъ letters don't mean anything, because the date of foundation of city in tsarist times was May,16 1703 (The Julian Calendar)
I think this medal was made in 21 century

Looks like a modern souvenir medal to me. I wasn't able to find any references in Russian about it, other than a post that Romario made on the Samara Numismat site.

It's a commemorative or medal, since no value is mentioned on it. Nice find though.
