And finally, the Zambia Series was a failed series and it died after 5 short years. On the other hand the Somalia Series is very well done and has been going strong for a decade plus with no end in site. APMEX sells Somalia Elephants now. Who would have thought?

I disagree
they changed Zambia to Somalia - that's it, as design idea remained the same (look at the finish of early somalians and compare them to zambians)... So, Zambia was for 5 years, Somalias with low mintage followed for 5 years, and then silver began its run up (2009). I believe there was no need to change the country as the demand for anything silver was high, that's why they increased the mintage 25 times and kept the country. If the silver stood low we could have seen another african country title on the coin.

If one takes a look at somalia monkeys, they were there for 5 years, so, it's possible that we could have seen another animal on somalia coins after 2008 release.
African big 5 animals are the best to make the series

All very valid points and you may be exactly right bekiz. I never looked at it from that perspective. Now I'm glad I have.

bekiz what's the back ground on the Zimbabwe series? Do you collect them? More info the better. They do look very nice.

And what are your thoughts about the Somalia Monkey Series?

Y, Zimbabwe had only this one set, but the coins are very beautiful as you can notice. I want to get them one day but I'm reluctant to pay big money. So it makes me look for them.

As of monkeys - they are not that popular in general if compared to other animals (tiger, elephant, lion) ...Even though they are highly bid on german ebay, though not that high as elephants. I'm collecting bullion of different countries instead of getting maples, eagles, etc, so I think I'm better off by having one of each monkeys, even if I pay high premiums. SO far I've got couple of 1999 monkeys(one is for sale on my ebay including 2001 zambia elephant).
Bullion collecting seems a relatively new idea among collectors as it is very broad, and precious. That's why I'm working on everything at the same time: koala, kookas, roos, britannias, pandas, both australian lunars, elephants. To collect all those would keep one busy for a long time.

So each has to decide what he wants. As of elephants, as we discussed the topic in SS, some of the elephants(colored, gilded, sets) are poor price performers compared to common version, and if they haven't proved to be winners I don't have reasons to buy them. Let alone the factor that I personally dislike anything gilded, colored (though I have some colored chinese lunars, and Tuvalu 2006 spider).

Very interesting.
1996 was an election year for Mugabe too.

bekiz I'd love to check out what you have on ebay if you wouldn't mind. I'm always buying coins and would rather buy from someone I know.

Shoot me the link when you have a chance. My email is *** Private information removed by Staff. Please do not post your address/email/phone number etc. ***

Great points both of you. I agree that the Zambia coins are not a failed series since they led us to the Somalia series. That said I don't think they will appreciate much beyond what they currently are at.

After weighing it, I only want to collect the 2003 proof from this series. If ever I see them cheap $60 or so,I may pick up the others but there,s lots out there with lower premiums.

I actually like the monkey series.:)

Thanks for sharing the ebay store and email guys. I'll probably be in touch.

I don't expect to see them that cheap. I'm just saying I'm not interested in them at the premiums they have reached. I will try to find a 2003 for a decent price though and then focus strictly on other stuff.

Good to know. Thank you for posting. Fakes are a big turn off for me. It just took one fake panda to turn me off collecting previous dates.

Yup do you know any reliable dealers that might have a 2003 reasonably priced?

Silverleaf, I am not sure, I'll dig around the Internet and see what I can come up with. I'll let you know tho. Those Zambia elephants look like a real tough hunt, which is fun.

Thanks. Yeah they seem a bit tricky. San morino is the only one with the proof on ebay but his price is high. I'll keep looking.

Which do you guys think looks better in hand, the gilded 2013 or the high relief?

@silverleaf

I found a dealer in Germany with some gilded ones for 2003 for 100 bucks.

things is I cant find their site now :/ let me look again

price action makes me think we get another run lower in silver and thats where I want to load up on missing coins in my collection for the elephants...

oh and I , I dunno how, but my 2013 got toning on the edge of the coin :/ have to get a replacement now
