One of the best parts about coin collecting is that you can put it aside for months or years and when you come back to it, you find it's so exciting to discover all the goodies that you have already collected. And the coins have increased in value or at least are a few years older and harder to come by.

I do get burnout from time to time. However, I still think about coins everyday. Either your into it or your not. I always look thru the change I get so I don't think I ever stop. Looks like my next purchase will be a Dansco 7070 type album.

I don't really have an issue with this. My coin collecting is what I do when I get stressed out on something else. My wife noticed this first, but when I get stressed at work, school, or elsewhere I'll find myself sitting down going through sorting, cataloging, organizing my world coins. I think its theraputic and helps my brain get organized and sort through problems.
When I am relaxed I will find myself on the living room floor playing with my Legos or in my workshop making sawdust.
I guess coins are what I fall back on with I get burned out on something else.

For the most part I find collecting to be relaxing. Better stated studying coins and their history are relaxing to me. Buying and selling can be fun and sometimes stressful!!! I have often been to busy to keep my nose in the hobby, but have never completely lost the desire to study numismatics and stop collecting. Mike  |

Hey Chrycopaul, I was a big Matchbox and Hot Wheel collector too. Sold them all, wish I didn't but without a place to display them I just could not see having them just in storage. I think coins are the only collectable you do not want to display. I am thinking about selling my collection of Egg Cups now as I have not added to it in over 5 years. See Ken all collectors interest peaks and declines. BUT take today for example big Noreaster storm here today and tommorow and where am I here on CC so there ya go. ONce you have it, it never really leaves this coin bug we have.

I collected coins quite often when I first started 6 or 7 years ago. I was always spending my extra money on coins. Then, along came the girlfriend. Stopped seriously collecting coins for a couple years. Yeah, I kept up with the State Quarters, checked out the coin shop every once in a great while. Now, being single and all, I'm back to collecting. Been single for the past year, year and a half. I spend a lot of money on coins now simply because I'm single and I don't have to spend money on them nasty creatures(of course, I'm kidding). Long story short, coin collecting + being single = easy, care free coin collecting. Ty |

I've changed collecting directions several times when I get "burned out" on one collection or another. I built a Dansco 7070 Type Set over a period of a couple of years, but didn't really enjoy it towards the end, so I sold it, with the exception of 5 or 6 coins that I really liked. They are now the basis for restarting a new Dansco 7070 with an eye towards a certain "look" and quality of coins.
Another thing I did recently to avoid burnout was to purchase a bunch of inexpensive foreign currency. Talk about some beautiful notes !!! They helped renew my passion for collecting other things, coins included.
I got bored with my coins a while back, so I bought a handmade hunting knife. I spent too much for it, but it rekindled the passion, too. I think the key is to stop what you're doing as soon as it isn't "fun" anymore ... and do something else for a while.

Never thought of burn out. I've been coin collecting for well over 60 years and no breaks at all. Of course there have been times when there were a few months where there were vastly more impotant things to do but coins have always been there somewhere. Now for instance with Spring here, just got to spend lots of time in the yard, getting a few convertible cars ready for taking out and lots of other things. Around here we have 3 coin shows a month, one gun show about every other month, camera shows each month, knife shows and just lots of other things to do. There probably has been times for several months when I didn't play around with coins but just can't stay away from the coin shows. My biggest problem is when so many shows fall on the same day.

I burn out when I spend a lot of time looking and coins I would like to have and planning out what I want for my set and not having the money to go out and get them. I went and found some cheap lots of foreign coins and I had more on my hands then I had time to deal with, kept me entertained for a long time without plunking down a bigger chunk on one or two coins. For me getting new pieces regularly keeps me interested regardless of their cost, and those bigger coins will always be out there waiting for me when I can manage them. Now I have a whole laundry list of Foreign coins I can be on the look out for.
