Personally I do not search through loonies as the dollar coins that you do want to find are the old Voyageur dollars and they are too large to find in loonie rolls. Voyageur dollars have much numismatic and possibly metal value, if the voyageur dollar is pre-1969. The current loonie first started circulating in 1987 after Canada phased out the dollar bill. I have a few dollar bills myself. As a result, the current loonie does not have much history to it and the metal is worth less than face value, so it is not really worth it to keep. I did 10 rolls a month ago and all I got was a 1995 upgrade. The only other reason I can see to search loonies is for 2016s and old-style 2012s. |

Candian Numismtist, thanks for your thoughts I am fully aware of older voyageur dollars and being silver. From roll hunting nickels, dimes and quarters heavily, I have found a number of modern proof silver coins. My thoughts lend me to think that if these are out there, shouldn't the loonies also be out there? or the toonies? I have not found any proof pennies either (yes I still get pennies). my biggest issues or draw back to doing loonies/toonies are: 1) zero chance of finding any US coinage (I pull about $2400 every 10 weeks or so currently) 2) Higher dollar commitment 3) realistically what am I going to find? I am not really interested in building a set of either coins. Am I right to stay away from these? |

Yes, you would be right to stay away from them. There really isn't much to find as their history is very short (1987-present for loonies, 1996-present for toonies)and the only coins that I could think of that you might want to keep are commemorative loonies and toonies, although they are very common. There is no valuable metal to be found in them. A low mintage loonie would be the 2016 loonie.

I picked up some boxes of coins today to look through this weekend. I just opened a box of quarters. They were all customer wrapped with the exception of one machine wrapped. Oddly, it had a red color to it so I pulled it out for a closer look. Turned out to be a mint roll of 2007 Ice Hockey quarters. Another first for me getting a ten year old mint roll. The added bonus was when I picked up the boxes, the teller said she had an old quarter that I might like. It was a 1929 that someone had cashed in with some other change.

Today I went to my local Credit Union to dump the dimes from last Friday's hunt. I didn't post it but I did find a 1958 silver dime  along with $4.20 in American dimes.   Today I went to my Scotiabank to grab a box of dimes, unfortunately they did not have any. Oh well! So I went to my usual CIBC and asked them for any CWR they may have in nickels, dimes and quarters, also if they happened to have any pennies. No pennies or dimes, but I managed to grab 8 rolls of nickels and 10 rolls of quarters. In the nickels I found 33 99.9 Nickel nickels, a 1962 and 6 USAs. In the quarters I found 1 1973 RCMP quarter and 4 USAs, didn't find any silver (not that I was expecting to). Forgot to mention, while I was at the coin counting machine, in the waste basket next to it was a pile of pennies that somebody just threw out.  Of course I picked them all out! In the mix I found 4 copper pennies, 2 1¢ Euros, 7 2¢ Euros, and 8 regular pennies. I can never understand why anybody would throw out currency, even if it is just pennies.  It's beyond me! Oh yeah, there was also a quarter in the machines reject slot! |

Really nice silver finds everyone! Being able to get a 1934 quarter from circulation is awesome! I haven't done very much searching recently, but here are some results since November. In the quarters and nickels, my only good finds were my first 2015 colourized poppy (finally) and a nice 1967 nickel. I also did 3 groups of 20 rolls of dimes, and each batch had at least one silver. The total was 4 silvers in 60 rolls. One of them was an ender, too. Also got a couple foreigns, but not all are pictured.     |

The colored commemoratives are not too rare, I have quite a few colored Canada flag commemorative quarters as well as around 15 colored commemorative poppy quarters. Nice finds on the silver!

Went to a bank yesterday and asked for a box of dimes. They didn't have a full box but they did have $200 in CWR dimes, so I took those. Found 38 USA dimes and two silvers!   A 1964 & a 1967 Found the 1967 in the very first roll!  |

Nice finds from the box of dimes!! Back in February I got 10 rolls of loonies, 10 rolls of quarters, and 20 rolls of dimes. Got very little from the quarters and even lost $1.50. The loonies produced an old-style 2012 and a 1996 specimen. The dimes had 67 American (including 24 in a single roll) and a 1956 silver that was an upgrade for me. Makes up for a roll that was short 10 coins.  |

Did my usual Friday CRH. Hunted $20 in Nickels, $250 in Dimes, & $100 in Quarters. Here's what I found: Nickels: 37 - 99.9% Ni Nickels 1 - 1947 7 - USA Dimes: Silver 1956 - 1 1967 - 1 72 - USA Quarters: Silver 1968 - 1 1973 RCMP - 1 USA - 2 Was a great hunt!! Really happy with the 50% Ag Quarter.    |
