Odd that a railroad bank would feature a ship on their bill of exchange. But it's a nice vignette. Pre-Civil War, I believe.
Very interesting!

Oh, those are terrific, Nells! For a good while I've had my eye out for a Sisson & Chapman check at the right price. I'll find one someday! The Bordentown is a beauty, too.

That check from the FNB of Albia features a famous vignette called "The Crossing". There's a story about it that you can read here: http://coxrail.blogspot.com/search?...043;Crossing However, your vignette is a lithographed version so the micro-lettering probably doesn't hold up.

GregAlex - Glad you like them! I don't actively collect checks, but pick up ones with nice engravings in my price range.

BUT you know what makes me feel like a real dumb-dumb? I can't even remember how/where I got most of them!! I can't help but think they came from Maine antique stores back when you could actually FIND stuff in them. Possibly a few came from mixed stamp lots... I honestly didn't remember even HAVING some of the nicer ones! That last one I probably did indeed pick up on The 'Bay due to the locomotive vignette.

There is a trio of checks I seemed to have missed scanning that I need to post. I know they have been in my collection a long time, and are super-snazzy. Must remember to share...

I've never gone into identifying printed revenues before. Someday I should...

Those Hopkinton checks are lovely! I especially like the eagle in the upper right. Thanks for posting those!

I seem to remember I picked those up at an antiques shop many years ago... which means they were cheap... Looking at them now, they aren't quite as snazzy as I thought they were BUT I still like them!
