Wow! I have to give it to the seller of the 1798 Trade dollar for referring to it as a replica and having copy stamped on it. I saw some of these in China last year, and they range from miserable wouldn't fool a drunken blind man, to fairly good. However their cheapness kills them in that they never make them from silver, but whatever metal, tin etc is readily available at the moment and that is the first giveaway.

I do have a fake Trade dollar that is made from silver. It is a pretty dang good fake, but a fake none the less.

It is a fake, even the link above takes you to an ebay sale that tells you its a replica.

No Trade dollars were produced in 1798.

Only in the United States does the Hobby Protection Act require the use of the word COPY on a replica. That is since the Act was enacted in 1974.

Replicas done before 1974 do not have to have the word COPY on it.

In any case, the coin is a well known Chinese manufactured counterfeit. It has the markings that says it's silver, but it is not... The coin is FAKE.

Thanks,
Bill

In case the question comes up, it is a technicality:-) The Hobby Protection Act was approved in November of 1973 but the protections therein did not take place until the Act was enacted in 1974:-)

Have Fun,
Bill

Thanks for that minor correction Bill. I did not know the precise details and it was about a year before I was born
