For British coins, it was the last year the old large-size 5p coin was struck for circulation. This coin was the same size and weight as the pre-decimal shilling - indeed, George III shillings dated 1816 were still legal tender until all the old quarter-size coins were demonetised on December 31, 1990. I was lucky to get this in change on a weekend trip to Dublin just a few weeks before the Euro took over!
