1973 French silver 10 francs - the last year of issue for this 37mm coin with the classic design by Augustin Dupre. This is also the scarcest date for this coin (not counting the rare 1964 pattern), with a mintage of 127,500 of which 79,000 were in FDC sets.  |

1972 Great Britain proof penny:  1972 was the first year since 1815 that no regular circulating coinage was struck in the UK. Banks still had large supplies of the new decimal coins introduced the previous year, and there was no demand for new coins. The halfpenny, penny, ten pence and fifty pence coins were struck for circulation again in 1973, and the 2p and 5p reappeared in 1975. The only British coin actually available in 1972 was the crown struck to commemorate the Silver Wedding of the Queen and Prince Philip. Early in 1976 The Royal Mint released proof sets for the years 1972 - 6, each containing a full set of coins for each year. So finally collectors could get their hands on a 1972 penny - if they broke open the set! Edited by NumisRob

1971 Great Britain Two New Pence:  1971 was a very important year for British coins, as the decimal system was introduced on 15th February. The cupro-nickel 5p, 10p and 50p had already been introduced as the equivalents of one, two and ten shillings: the three new bronze coins were legal tender only from this date. The pre-decimal penny and threepence disappeared rapidly from circulation and were demonetised in September. Despite many concerns, the switchover to decimal currency went very smoothly, although some members of the public accused stores of profiteering by putting up their prices! The 2p coin was designed by Christopher Ironside and shows the badge of the Prince of Wales with the motto 'Ich Dien' meaning 'I Serve'. The 1971 1p and 2p are the oldest coins in the UK that can be found in normal circulation: the 5p, 10p and 50p were all reduced in size in the 1990s, and the half penny was demonetised at the end of 1984. |
