Hello from Santa Fe. I've been collecting and coin searching since my 50th birthday four months ago but have dove in completely and learned a lot already but look forward to learning much more. So far, I have found some pretty nice coins, I'm into error coins mostly, and would like to meet others with expertise and or passion. But I love the old coins, too. I live by the Old Santa Fe Trail and started metal detecting, which got me looking into coins, now I am hooked. Here are a couple questions I have: I get it about the difference in mechanical and actual doubling, but are the variation coins worth anything? I mean, is a variation nickel worth like 20 dollars to anyone but a coin searcher? Also, I have found two pennies that appear to be without copper cladding. I know chemicals can change the color, but these really appear to be forgotten, but I can't find anything referring to something like this. I have many more questions but they can wait. I would also like to mention that I have been a professional fine artist my whole adult life (Since I was 22) and show my paintings in many galleries in the west, including Canyon Rd and Marshal Way for those that know what I mean, and would love to trade art for coins. I do many custom pieces for people. Other than that, here are a couple pics. I would love to hear any opinions and estimates of value these might have, especially the Merc on the wrong planchet. Those sound like some interesting coins you have. Your best bet for getting some info on them is to post topics in the appropriate forum (US modern error/variety for the ones you mentioned), and make sure to add pictures.  |
