Twins! Well almost. These two came out back to back from a roll of 1939's.

I don't think that's a woody, but it appears to have the black parallel stripes present on many cents of the late 70s and early 80s. I believe Coop has some information on these.

Thanks! It definitely looks like wood grain, but as always, my technical knowledge of the criteria is unformed...for now!

That's the right attitude.
The wood grain pattern occurs when the alloy (0.95 Cu, 0.05 Sn & Zn) isn't mixed properly, so some areas of the metal have higher tin or zinc content and thus a lighter color. When the ingot is rolled into a sheet, it is stretched out laterally, as are these patches of brass or bronze, creating the 'woody' pattern with light-colored streaks.
Although your coin is similar, you can see that rather than the yellowish stripes present on other woodies, it has very fine, parallel dark lines. There have been discussions about this on CCF before, so maybe Jbuck can use his superpowers to locate some of those threads.

I wish Mike would have credited me for that "dirty rollers" theory. I postulated that well before he wrote the article.
