I've been away for a little while, but wanted to close the loop by posting my last coin for this thread. Well, last one for now, as I am still actively collecting early dated coins. Interestingly, this coin has been the final coin posted for all three of the "How far back can we go threads", such as the third one here: http://goccf.com/t/195589&whichpage=1In any case, here is a 1/2 Schwertgroschen from the German Duchy of Saxony. It was minted in Freiburg in 1492 AD. The obv inscription is F A H D G DVCS SAX TV LA HA HIS while the rev inscription is GROSSVS NOVVS DVCVH SAXONI 92. The attribution is Levinson I-290.

By way of a summary, here is a complete listing of all the coins in this thread (so far) as well as how completely we were able to cover the main varieties:
Region I (Germany): 10, 14, 15, 34, 44, 74, 81, 87, 95, 103a, 119, 127, 148, 156, 185 (two examples), 243, 250a, 290, 303, 320, 337a, 368, and 391a. Of the 468 main varieties in Levinson's book, we covered 23 of them (5%).
Region II (Southern Netherlands): 12, 22, 34, 41, 54, 131, 141, and 148. Of the 158 main varieties in Levinson's book, we covered 8 of them (5%).
Region III (Northern Netherlands): 58, 104, 152, 199, and 271a. Of the 282 main varieties in Levinson's book, we covered 5 of them (2%).
Region IV (Habsburg Territories): 5a, 7, 21, 24, 41, 42, 64, and 65. Of the 66 main varieties in Levinson's book, we covered 8 of them (12%).
Region V (Switzerland): N/A
Region VI (Scandinavia): N/A
Region VII (Italy): N/A
Region VIII (France): N/A
In total, of 1018 main varieties, we covered 44 (4%) of them in this thread.
I hope folks have found this thread entertaining. While I'd prefer to avoid competing with too many others when bidding for these coins, I'm hopeful that a few readers have been converted to collecting early dated European coins.
Please feel free to post your new acquisitions here!

I'd love to get some early dated, but I have no idea where to look. And probably couldn't afford it if I found it, anyway.
I do have a few 16th century AD dated coins (1517, 1521, 1532, 1555, 1556, 1566, 1600, maybe one or two more that I forgot - just took some nice photos of the 1566, planning to post it in the other thread), but nothing earlier, so far. And the 1517 had been my oldest AD dated coin for something like three and a half years now, which, given my sheer attempts at finding some pre-1600 stuff, is more than a bit silly. Maybe it was the money - I paid $15 for it back then, and I'd definitely pass on such a price today.

@january1may, yes some of the prices on these guys can be stratospheric. However, there are multiple folks on vcoins who sell them (mostly out of Germany and the Netherlands). Also, I'm looking forward to seeing your 1566 pics!

An interesting thread it surely is! Though the cost That said, even without participating in auctions and without a huge budget, there are some specimens to buy. Whether you'll find them acceptable - that depends on your tolerance of faults. There are several Spitzgroschen from 1470s available right now. The cheapest one I have found was 38 EUR (bent twice and with a planchet crack unrelated to the bends). Around 100 EUR seems to be enough for a specimen without such major faults, at least for some dates such as 1475. Another one I've encountered more than once was Saxony - 1/2 Schwertgroschen from the 1490s. As for these, the cheapest one was 65 EUR (bent). Most of the good ones were in the 150-200 EUR range. And if you're able to buy a coin in the $200 range, you may as well consider an undated medieval coin, which are at that price often much nicer than the dated ones...

My tolerance for faults is pretty nice (you'll see when I post the 1566 coin*, and the 1532 has problems in a different way), but my tolerance for prices is not - 38 euros is, this side of gold or perhaps large silver, waaay at the upper end of what I could pay (and most likely beyond it). And that's assuming that they would ship to my country, or that the shipping would not be unaffordably expensive itself (I wouldn't pay $20 for shipping, but I can't see how it could possibly be much cheaper).
When I said that the 1517 coin cost me $15, I meant 15 pre-sanctional 2013 dollars, i.e. 500 rubles - $15 would be about twice as much today.
For what it's worth, I'm due to receive, anytime soon, my paycheck for November and December - about $140 or so of new spending money. Maybe this time I'll actually buy a large silver (a gold coin would eat all of this in one go, so probably not that).
*) ironically enough, the same place offered undamaged examples for only two dollars more, but I was running out of money - when I realized what I had, I ran there the next day for an undamaged one, but couldn't find the table, and the next time I found it they didn't have any such stuff anymore

@louie, I'm really glad that you have found this thread and I would enjoy hearing more about your collection. We definitely need some more medieval collectors to offset all the ancients collectors. The correct format for communication here at CCF is pretty clear though. Perhaps you could start by posting one of your coins here along with some info about it?

Spence, I am going to the Whitman/Balt. show next week. I am having some relevant coins imaged there. Are you attending? If so, let's meet and talk coins. Louie
Is there a way to contact you without the entire forum watching?!?

Quote: Is there a way to contact you without the entire forum watching?!? Yes, once you make 50 half-decent posts, you are allowed to sent PMs. I agree that this is somewhat inconvenient (in particular the 50 limit is a bit high); I guess it's an anti-spamming policy. It shouldn't be that hard to make 50 posts, however (you, in particular, could probably do it just by posting pictures of your coins in this thread - I doubt you don't have any camera).
