terry8835 Pillar of the Community United States 1450 Posts	Posted 01/27/2017 5:15 pm You know Sir Issac Newton was head of the British Mint as his actual job. He was there to figure out how to stop employees from shaving coins and other dirty deeds. He did not get a check from the King for discovering the Law of Gravity, but he did get that job at the Mint. I know that the penalty for shaving coins or anything to do with counterfeiting money was usually death in the most awful way possible. Under Henry V111 the penalty for counterfeiting was to be slowly boiled in oil which is actually worse than the penalty for treason which was hanging, drawing and quartering....yuck. Since this is the US coin forum, I will post this non-coin note created by Benjamin Franklin's currency making operation in Philadelphia which printed colonial notes that indicated that to counterfeit his currency was punishable by death. The copper engraved leaves in his printed notes were early anti-counterfeiting devices that were discovered in the 1960s.
