France 1968 500 Francs showing mathematician Blaise Pascal. As with the other notes in this series, the portrait on the front appears in reverse on the back of the note. This note was worth about $100 at the time of issue: like all pre-2002 French notes, it has now been demonetised, and I picked up this rather tatty specimen in a dealer's junk tray! This is the first issue date for this note.

Spain 100 Pesetas 1965. This note would have been familiar to the numerous British holidaymakers who visited the Costa Brava and Costa del Sol in the late sixties and early seventies. I remember getting one in change in 1978, long after the introduction of the Manuel de Falla type:
