Fell in love with these when my buddy Larry explained the wheat/memorial difference to me in 1966. Still love them today!

This is a proof 1938. It has issues, which I do not know the root cause of. It looks much better in hand but there is that ugly "ring" of what looks like haze or toning or I don't know what it is, running around the rim area. There is no dust or dirt on the coin, just a dirty 2x2. Color in hand is a deep darker red with no cameo effect. I tried for 30 minutes when I got this coin and was unable to get any satisfactory photographs using any possible combination of lighting and position.
