Next for the spotlight, the 1938 New Rochelle, New York 250th Anniversary Half Dollar:

The 1938 New Rochelle coin is another example of a design using events/elements from history to allegorically symbolize concepts vs. just being literal representations.

The coin's obverse evokes the founding history of New Rochelle via use of John Pell receiving a "fatted calfe" as part of the original contract to purchase land from him that would be developed into New Rochelle.

The reverse presents a a fleur-de-lis, which is meant to symbolize the city's French roots and its connection with the French Huguenots.

The next allegorical spotlight to shine on the classic era of US commemorative coins (Silver Types) falls upon the 1946 Iowa Statehood Centennial Half Dollar:

Allegorical symbolism is found on the coin's obverse through its incorporation of an adaptation of the Iowa State Seal. The Seal incorporates multiple symbolic elements with tie to Iowa's history and culture:

On the coin, the Seal is "abbreviated," with the eagle being the main carryover element - eagles typically represent the concepts of strength and power. In its beak, the eagle has a ribbon which is inscribed "Our liberties we prize, and our rights we will maintain". Such is the State Motto which is symbolic of the virtues and ideals of Iowa's citizens - including its support of civil rights and personal freedoms.

The obverse also includes 29 stars above the eagle; Iowa was the 29th state to join the Union.

Next up is the 1946-51 Booker T. Washington ("BTW") Half Dollar:

The coin's allegorical elements are found on its reverse. Seen there are a cabin - representing the slave cabin in which BTW was born, along with an image of the Hall of Fame for Great Americans in New York. BTW was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1945 and inducted in 1946. The pairing of the two structures is meant to symbolize "Progress" and the personal journey experienced by BTW. The reverse side's inscription: - "FROM SLAVE CABIN TO HALL OF FAME" summarizes his journey.
