Quote:Never saw an Encased Cent like that before either nautilator. Have you checked to see if it glows in the dark? Alas, it doesn't. Actually, if anybody knows of any tokens that do that, let me know. I'd definitely look into them.

Thanks jbuckster, There are two big Reagans, that's the tougher one. Reminds me vaguely of the old MTV Genesis Land of Confusion video too when he wakes up underwater.

I thought that this medal was quite unique so I made a reasonable offer to the seller and not only did he decline the offer, he raised the price by $5! So I sent him a nice short email but he never responded back. next thing I know it shows up in my mail box on Saturday! I checked the activity on both my credit card and bank debit card for a charge but there is no charge for it. I then checked my ebay purchase history and there is nothing indicating that I purchased it. I emailed the seller again and have not heard back from him. at this point I'm not going to look the gift horse in the mouth and leave it alone unless of course, a charge appears on my account. so, there is the story how I got it, now I will attempt to tell the medals story! The medal is Armenian, it is very large at 65.2mm (2 9/16") in diameter and weighs a whopping 159.7 grams! made of bronze. the person on it is Gregory of Narek he was an Armenian monk, poet, mystical philosopher, theologian, composer and saint of the Armenian Apostolic Church and Catholic Church, born into a family of writers. for more information please see the link as there is far to much too write on this famed Poet. Born: 951 AD, Narek, Ararat, Armenia Died: 1003, Narekavank, Turkey Parents: Khosrov of Andzev https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregory_of_NarekAlso, if anyone out there can translate Armenian, I would appreciate knowing what is written on the reverse. thank you for looking!

Toot ~ Nice images! Didn't this show up earlier in another thread? Or did you email me about it? Have you bought from this seller in the past? Might be a secret CCF member paying it forward. hmmmm? If it's a gift, I would certainly have to buy something else from that seller in appreciation.
An interesting medal, and just as much an interesting post.

@TNG, no, never posted it. Yes I did email you about a few weeks ago. And no, I've never bought from this seller before but I like your idea of buying something from him to show my appreciation! But I am going to wait for a couple of weeks to see if my credit card gets charged. It just seems quite odd to me. Nonetheless, thank you! It really is a unique medal! I have it on a piece of soft felt on my coffee table. I find myself picking it up quite often just to look at it. Strange huh!

Thank you jbuck! TNG, I forgot to add, I never thought about a secret CCF member paying it forward, a few of you do have my mailing address. Hmmm..... Edit: My apologies! I just realized that the link I posted does not work! I will try to remedy that ASAP. Edit: Link is fixed!

After I posted buying about buying something else from him in appreciation, I found his auction ( I think ). If it's the same guy, he only has a few other big brass medals and no coins. I wouldn't be too quick do anything either. Good thinking.

I just received this one today. Main reason why I purchased it is because it is from 1964! I'm a sucker for pretty much anything 1964 (my birth year). It is a bronze medal weighing 19.1gr. And the diameter is 38.7mm. It was to celebrate the 150th anniversary (1814-1964) of New Harmony Indiana. George Rapp was the founder of New Harmony. Probably not a very sought after medal, could be why I couldn't find much information on it. Unfortunately someone tried cleaning at some point.

Not so sure it was cleaned. A lot of those lines look raised like "in the die" from polishing. The finish they put on some bronze medals is sometimes very inconsistent. He's an interesting looking guy. I had a room-mate named Pat Rapp in the early 70's in Louisiana. He could talk your ear off. We nicknamed him "The Rapper". LOL

TNG, I can see some abrasive marks when I angle it in the right light. That is why I thought cleaning. Thank you for that insight! Sounds like you nick named your old roommate appropriately.lol MeadowviewCollector, excellent information! Thank you very much for link. That is quite an interesting story. Unbelievable how inexpensive some of those coins sold for back then. Probably Couldn't touch some of them for under 4 figures now.
