Here's another Exposition medal struck by the US Mint...

The Tennessee Centennial and International Exposition was held in Nashville, Tennessee from May 1 to October 31, 1897. The Expo was staged to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Tennessee's admission into the Union as the 16th state. It would have been nice to have held the Expo in 1896, Tennessee's actual statehood centennial year, but funding issues and construction delays pushed the event into 1897. Nonetheless, the fair was successful and was attended by just under 1.7 million visitors, it also earned a small profit.

The US Congress authorized $100,000 to participate in the Exposition, which included the set up of a US Mint exhibit. Souvenir medals of a single design were struck in the Mint's exhibit booth. The medals were designed by Charles Barber and were struck in gold-plated (gilt) brass. The obverse depicts the Mint Building in Philadelphia, the reverse features an inscription identifying the Exposition.

Its design is not very "Tennessee Expo," but it was what it is!

Here are a few medals from the 1907 Jamestown Tercentennial Exposition held in Norfolk County, VA to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the first permanent, English-speaking settlement in North America.

The Official Medals shown were struck at the Exposition (in the US Mint exhibit) from dies prepared in Philadelphia. The medals shown are silver, bronze and gilt. (I also have a silver-plated bronze example, HK-346, but it was unavailable for scanning.)

1905 Lewis And Clark Centennial Exposition
So-called Dollar HK-328 PCGS XF45

A-Continuing-Thread-~-Post-Your-Tokens,-Medals,-Exonumia-Acquisitions

A-Continuing-Thread-~-Post-Your-Tokens,-Medals,-Exonumia-Acquisitions

I have counted 11 variations of this basic design on different distinct medals or "So-called Dollars".
Different compositions with subtle differences and another group with a different exposition building on the reverse.

When you encounter these, you may think it is the same one over and over, but certain ones may be quite scarce.
Therefore it might be fun to put together a set and it might be expensive too.

I bought this one because I liked the natural darkening of the silver plating and hints of bronze showing through. It is an honest souvenir and had a little travel time in somebody's pocket but not too much.
I thought it looked attractive compared to many others I have seen and had some character.

I wrote a bit on my other Lewis & Clark medal here and might just as well put a link to that here if you care to read a bit about it.

1917 Battle of Verdun Silver Medal
by S.E. Vernier

A-Continuing-Thread-~-Post-Your-Tokens,-Medals,-Exonumia-Acquisitions

This is a more scarce silver medal that is the same size as the bronze one that I have collected and that post can be seen here.

The video in that post was removed by yoo-toobe so here's another.
4oabxoP_jVM

At 7:12 a.m. on the morning of February 21, 1916, a shot from a German Krupp 38-centimeter long-barreled gun—one of over 1,200 such weapons set to bombard French forces along a 20-kilometer front stretching across the Meuse River—strikes a cathedral in Verdun, France, beginning the Battle of Verdun, which would stretch on for 10 months and become the longest conflict of World War I.

I believe there were about 143,000 casualties on the Germany side and 162,440 on the French in this battle alone. Perhap I am wrong or those numbers were for a particular vicinity or timeframe. I am not sure?
(The video gives much higher casualty numbers near the end of the video and I have read The battle lasted for 302 days, the longest and one of the most costly in human history.
In 2000, Hannes Heer and Klaus Naumann calculated that the French suffered 377,231 casualties and the Germans 337,000, a total of 714,231, an average of 70,000 a month.
In 2014, William Philpott wrote of 976,000 casualties in 1916 and 1,250,000 in the vicinity during the war.)

World War I Era 1917 France Battle Of Verdun "On Ne Passe Pas" Memorial Medal. Loosly translated, "On Ne Passe Pas" means "We're Not Going", or, more likely "They Shall Not Pass", referring to the German Army.
This battle was so bloody men called it the "Meat Grinder".

This medal was sculpted by S.E. Vernier in 1917. With a reverse text of "Verdun 21 Fevrier 1916", (VERDUN February 21, 1916) this medal measures 37mm (1 7/16 inch) in diameter.

@TNG: Great medals! Thanks for sharing the images and history. I never knew there were so many variations on the L&C Expo medal.

@999fine: Thank you for the kind words - happy to assist with brightening your day!
