During my time on active duty, challenge coins weren't as prevalent as they are now. This one represents the Army Branch Insignia I wore:   The sun, composed of four straight and wavy alternating rays is the symbol of Helios, who could see and hear everything. The straight rays of the sun allude to the four points of the compass and MI's worldwide mission. Placement of the sun symbol beneath an ancient symbol of secrecy -- the oriental blue rose. The partially concealed, unsheathed dagger alludes to the agressive and protective requirement and the aspect of pysical danger inherent in the mission. . . Leave it to the MI guys to use an insignia that needs a paragraph's worth of explanation. The combat arms branches get it right: Infantry-- crossed rifles; Field Artillery - Crossed cannons; Armor - A tank over crossed cavalry swords. No explanations needed. |

A new medal for my collection of Exonumia of Utrecht, The Netherlands, and its iconic Dom Tower. This medal is about the visit of Queen regnant Emma and her daughter Wilhelmina to Utrecht in 1892. Wilhelmina was 12 years old at that time. She would become Queen six years later.  |

Yesterday I came across this treasure which had been stored in a desk drawer instead of an album. It's been in my possession since Nov. 8, 1970. My parents attended this game at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, and such doubloons were included in the game program (I was home watching on our black-and-white TV). This game is memorable because Tom Dempsey kicked an NFL record 63 yard field goal as time expired to propel the underdog Saints to a 19-17 victory over the Lions. This record stood for over 43 years. The Saints finished the year 2-11-1, while the Lions went 10-4 and into the playoffs as a wild card. Unfortunately my parents kept neither the program or their ticket stubs.   Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

This finally arrived today. It was engraved by Julien-Louis Merot and struck at the Paris Mint in 1925. It is 68mm in diameter.  |
