From North-East to South-East England... Appledore is a small village in Kent. In the 18th century it had a windmill owned by a co-operative or 'Union' of local farmers. They issued their own halfpenny trading token depicting the mill in 1794: Sadly, the mill fell into disuse at the end of the 19th century and the main timber body was demolished around 1908. The octagonal brick base still survives and has been converted into a house:

copper Jeton from Holland, the Netherlands 1593 (references Dugniolle 3325; van Loon I 437 ) to celebrate the capture of the stronghold fortified town of Geertruidenberg (mons Gertrudis) by prince Maurits of Oranje Nassau, son of William of Orange. Untlil 1593 the town was oppupied by troops from the Spanish Netherlands. OBV: map of the siege, showing the many war vessels of the prince on the river Maas REV: GERTRVDIS BERGA AB HISP VINDICANT ORD CONFOED DVCE PRIN NASS IN CONSP EXERC HOST CIC IC XCIII Geertruidenberg a strongly fortified town, on the Bergse Maas at the border between Brabant and Holland, was considered the gateway to Holland, and a stronghold much desired both by the Spanish army and the army of the revolting Northern provinces during the 80 years of war of independence of the Netherlands. In 1583, Maurice of Nassau succeeded in capturing this formidable fortress from the Spanish army. This fact more or less secured the northern revolting provinces from Spanish occupation during the next decades until the end of the war in 1648. A detailed engraving from the 1593 siege made by Baudartius in 1622 is shown below: A satellite map of Geertruidenberg today, still betrays the typical structures of a fortified town of the 16th and 17th centuries
