The gold medals were presented to certain high level NASA employees that worked on the missions. Examples in gold by were not originally made available to the public and they are extremely rare today. Later, copies in pewter and sterling silver were produced by a different company and offered to the general public. I have only ever seen two gold examples, one for Apollo 11 and this Apollo 13 example, which I own. This Apollo 13 example comes with the original box of issue.
