They had the exact same appearance, except copper colored (which isn't even "reprocessing" because they weren't plated to begin with). However, 1943 steel cents are reprocessed with regularity. They have been reprocessing these for a very long time. I purchased this set more than 45 years ago. Some of them get some pretty wild toning.  I wouldn't take previous comments too seriously. People are just trying to have a little fun. |

As others have said, reprocessed. I find often these small sets have cleaned or otherwise damaged coins, most likely best to stay away from them.

Coinfrog, IDK why you would make that last comment. I'm sorry for the rant. I only started looking at these coins I have bc my husband is very very ill and it gives me something productive to do while I sit by his side. He spent the month of Jan in the hospital. We all have life issues and yes this one has made me emotional. Anyway,IDK what you mean by offer, I'm not allowed to sell anything from here. Ive been told its not worth anything so Ill prob just leave it in the set and pass it to my grandson but if I don't see an interest in coins from him in the next few years, Ill probably sell everything!

Dear ccobb: I'm sorry if my attempt at humor early in the thread seemed insensitive, particularly as you are dealing with a family illness, for which I offer you all best wishes. As you can see, under your name it says "Valued Member." I have noticed that people here are usually treated that way; I think there is less snarkiness here than on most boards where technical matters are discussed (one might wryly say that fans of what may be a dying hobby are not going to go out of their way to offend those who bring friendly inquiries). The other thing about the title is that a "Valued Member" with over 90 posts is given, one might say, the honor of being joshed a bit, as opposed to an absolute newbie, who is treated as such, or should be, and my comment was based on the assumption that a typo was in play, and it introduced a certain possibility of humor. (I actually still enjoy pondering the notion of a 1943 LMC, and while it would probably be the greatest rarity in numismatic history, nothing says it's *absolutely* impossible that it could happen if some mint employee got very lucky and very creative.) Anyway, sorry if I was off base. I will take the liberty of saying that if your grandson was alarmed by the "beating a dead horse" meme, I would have taken that moment to defuse any shock he felt by explaining that it is an old, old, saying that has nothing with hurting horses. If he does not know what a figure of speech is, that's a good learning moment. The people at CCF are not horse beaters; I feel safe in saying that. I'll close by adding that notwithstanding my defense of the figure of speech/meme, I can understand the youngster's alarm. Once when I was young, I was in a golf shop with my father, and I saw a sign that said "Dogfight Saturday--Entry Fee $5." I was so horrified that my father was hanging out in a place that had dog fights that I did not even dare ask him about it. I'm not sure how long it was until I found out that a dogfight was an informal type of golf tournament. |

Thank you Centsei If you do read this just know that I'm sorry for my rant also, the whole thing just hit me at the wrong moment. I taught college algebra for years and I never once made a student feel stupid by making comments about their mistakes. I'm not stupid but I am ignorant! I know absolutely nothing, zip, nada about coins but I'm trying to learn and I'm trying to keep the "dying hobby" alive by getting my grandson interested in it as well. But this is not the first time I've had (what I consider to be) rude responses. For example I posted a couple coins, Peace dollars I think, and inquired if they were proof coins bc of the mirror like finish on them and the reply that I got was no they aren't and this isn't rocket science. OK so that made me feel stupid but I didn't say anything, I just watched more you tube videos on Proofs, etc. and tried to teach myself about the differences but it is still confusing to me...Cameo I get, but I still don't know why the mirrored bkgrnd coin I posted is not a proof. idk what a matte finish is. I read as many posts as I can everyday and one girl was asking how to get proof wheat pennies for cheap and the reply she got was "maybe you can find a little old lady whose husband just died". I get it, it was intended as a joke butI was shocked by that response bc I'm a little old lady about to lose her husband. I'm going to be more careful about what I post and I'm not going to get upset about comments anymore. Life is tough enough right now! Once again, thank you for your kind response ! One more thing! bc I'm afraid to ask the forum Ill just ask you ... yesterday I saw a post where someone found their first "floating roof" LMC and I just love that kind of stuff. LOL are there other abnormalities like that to look for (on any denomination). I know about buggs bunny and actually found one! I know when I see doubling but I really can't tell the difference yet in MD and DD. And trust me I'm trying, I watch videos, Ive read Wexler? I read posts but I really don't get it yet. Hoping it will come with time. If I knew of some other things to look for it would make the hunt more fun! Thanks for your time! |
