I recall seeing a video on this several years ago. If I recall correctly the person who made the video could tell by the sound of the slab when tapped on a surface that the ultrasonic seal was weak and could be cracked opened easily.

I wish I had known before hand, would have been interesting to see how hard it was to get it open. I remember just hitting it once wrapped in a towel and feeling it come apart completely. It was a very clean separation along the seal line but it did chip a little bit where I had hit it.

I assume something just went wrong during the seal, but now I kind of wonder if there was just something defective about the plastic on that one that didn't allow a proper seal
Rest in Peace

I'm not sure if my you tube attachment will work but if you search "Bedford Coin's review of problems with the new PCGS slab" you'll find it.

I remember that, for whatever reason that group just didn't seal.

Yeah, that was several years ago, so yeah, that problem was obviously corrected. Probably some sort of equipment failure and even just not properly adjusted. Ultrasonic assembly can be touchy and if the operator is not familiar with how it should work and even sound when all is functioning properly problems can go undetected.

Something like that happening is fairly rare because the slab rarely split open easily enough to not show evidence of fracturing along the edge.

Our counterfeiters are so good today they can make almost anything and sometimes better than the original.
