Why wouldn't he? It's posted in the metal detecting forum, where it belongs. Which is more than can be said for some other peoples posts.
Good job, Harry.

Nuggethill, thanks for the great thread. Just finished reading it start to finish and waiting for the next installment.
I don't think I'm alone when I say it makes me want to jump out there and start swinging. I'm only a couple hours from the CA gold country so I've given it some thought and had done some previous research. Don't want to jump in blind though. I've got a Garrett Scorpion Gold Stinger but still new to me with only 30 some hours on it. Lots to learn yet. It's a dual purpose coin shooter/gold hunter with AM mode and manual ground balancing. Old design but I've seen more than a few of the vets swear by it. No discrimination sounds scary though just knowing all the scrap metal/junk/trash some of the old prospectors left behind. I may plan a trip next year if I ever master this machine and get to feeling comfortable with it.

Thanks SideKick CA I'm glad you enjoyed it and yes there is still gold in the ground here in Australia but don't be fooled it took a lot of research and good luck to find, the gold that you see in this thread I went weeks without even a gram then on the other hand there's been a half oz in the first 4 hours on the first day just depends on your luck, mates just come back from Western Australia with three and a half oz's of gold I also consider him a better detectorist than I but as I said it's also your luck on the day.
Also you can still find gold on the Californian gold fields if you do the research and put the time in to it,just as an example there was a 95oz nugget found there (CA gold fields)not so long ago and with there way of thinking they thought all the gold was gone until this piece surfaced, also what the miners left behind as some of the trash would be considered relics in this day and age so go low and slow and dig every signal.
If I can help you in anyway just let me know.
regards Harry

P.S. a foot note to the 95oz nugget found in the Californian gold fields in the last thread I don't know if I have the full story but here go's the story I've heard so far,

it went to auction with photo and was sold at that auction for an undisclosed amount an Australian had seen the photo and red flagged it to be an Aussie nugget,

red faced the seller gave back to the buyer the auction money so if anyone can add to this please go for it.
I'm heading bush (Victoria's Golden Triangle) at the end of the month so wish me luck,

I'm going to carry on from where I left off last trip

also I'll post the Canberra trip when I'm back

regards Harry

Salting using 8# nuggets is rather risky biz, especially since you know anyone buying into it is going to vet it.

Undisclosed phone buyer, $400,000 bid.

Haven't seen anything about it being fake. Supposedly an amateur detectorist found it in CA.

The part I can't figure is that you'd think it would be worldwide news if someone bought a 8# OZ nugget. The guy apparently bought it, got it to the you SofA, then showed up out of nowhere with his "find".

I can understand the motive: it would sell for more as the biggest CA nugget than as "another big OZ nugget", and maybe a new gold rush would increase the value of his claim. The part I don't understand is why the auctioneer didn't trace it back to OZ in the first place. There can't be that many nuggets that size to have to check...in fact, prolly only one.

G'Day BiggFredd here In Australia they publish a monthly journal called Gold,Gem & Treasure I don't know if you have heard of it or not (great reading for detectorists ) but the story of the Washington nugget continues in the September 2011 addition of this Journal,on pages 42 to 44 does explain the origin of this nugget.
I wont type the whole story just extracts
"was actually an Australian nugget called the "Orange Roughie" unearthed more than 20 years ago" the story go's on to say the evidence was refuted by Fred Holabrid saying he believed Jim Sanders 100% then was shown the newspaper clipping (published with photo's) from the original fined by Reg Wilson and Murry Cox near Ballarat in 1987 by the Melbourne Sun,the story go's on to say that the evidence was by far to great and they did declare that it was an Australian nugget and there were no charges laid the nugget was resold for less and every one ended up happy ever after now what's wrong with this story BiggFredd
