- it was a Christmas ritual. I for one always enjoyed the Plum Duff, and the presence of coins didn't add much to the occasion for me.
I have heard it said that this was done "for luck", which, as long as one doesn't choke on a coin, might arguably be true.

I hate to say this xshift but looking at your original picture and your 'after acetone' picture I'm sure I can see the remains of the S mintmark under the scroll on the right hand side.
