 Thanks all for viewing and appreciating the coins! When I started this thread I did it as a way to connect with my birth country. I also love the history and the thousands of coins that are available and while many are unobtainable, the vast majority are priced lowly compared to the US coins. I never expected to have so many people follow and comment (over 700 posts and 38,000 views). I hope the history and background are entertaining as to me collecting is a way to revisit the past (both the good and the bad).  |

From 1987 to 2000 Portugal released a 4 series set of coins commemorating the great discoveries. In total they released 12 sets, this is set #6. This set is from 1995 and commemorates the discoveries of Afonso de Albuquerque who was the1st Duke of Goa (1453 - 16 December 1,1515). He was a Portuguese general, admiral, and statesman. He served as viceroy of Portuguese India from 1509 to 1515, during which he expanded Portuguese influence across the Indian Ocean and built a reputation as a fierce and skilled military commander. Albuquerque advanced the three-fold Portuguese grand scheme of combating Islam, spreading Christianity, and securing the trade of spices by establishing a Portuguese Asian empire. The set comes in a nice case.  Like a lot of US Comms, these sets are selling for mostly the bullion value. I was able to pick up the full 4 coin set for €6 euros over the bullion price. And for €6, I got the case, certificate and OGP. Not a bad deal. The Coin. I am happy to see you could find some proof coins of these very affordable series. It is a shame I think that some have been melted already.
The Flor de la Mar represented in the obverse of that coin remains one of the largest sunk treasures. In sunk somewhere near Sumatra will most of the look taken from the sultan of Malacca.
There were initially 10 series planed. In the end there were 11, with the insertion of the VIII series. The later series are scarcer.
I now remembered that one of the coins of this series has volcanoes. Will not say more.

Some very beautiful coins and wonderful history on the chairs. I found out from taking a few cruises, that there are a lot of Indians on cruise ships, that come from Goa, due to it's seafaring history.

The next coins is of the Maluku Islands or the Moluccas an archipelago in the eastern part of Indonesia. The islands were known as the Spice Islands because of the nutmeg, mace, and cloves that were exclusively found there. Those spices were search for by Europeans in the 16th century. Both originate from the Maluku Islands. Reverse: Ship and Maluku Islands, volcanic archipelago with the influential Ternate and Tidore kingdoms among others. The archipelago was named "Spice Islands" Its a really pretty coin.   |

Finally was able to get in the office, today's coin. The coin commemorates the discovery of the island of Timor. Issuer: Portugal Period: Third Republic (1974-date) Type: Non-circulating coins Year : 1995 Value: 200 Escudos (200 PTE) Currency: Escudo (1911-2001) Composition: Silver (.925) Weight: 26.5 g Diameter 36 mm Orientation: Coin alignment Demonetized: 28 February 2002 References: KM683a Mintage: 20,000 The Obverse features the Portuguese coat of arms, to the left a sandalwood tree, and below a 16th century ship sailing to the left. The Reverse features the a cross of the Order of Christ superimposed to a map of the Island of Timor, archipelago of Solor above left (North west). Around, several symbols of myths and local traditions, a cobra, a buffalo, a horse, a crocodile, a diadem and a man standing with traditional adornments.   |
