Nice Kew Gardens guys - that coin is the Rosetta stone of modern British commem coins. I will start 2009 with the usual suspects.   The New Zealand coins included a 10c and a 50c piece. The 3rd and 2nd issues of these new small size coins.   Australia issued all their coins and several commems - yet I stick to a $2 and a 5c (All my NZ and Aus photos are old ones from 2020 and thus quality may be lower).   Fiji however went all out and replaced their coinage with smaller stainless steel versions. The existing coins were already steel but large size, these were much smaller. The 1c and 2c were history and the 5c was the same size, the others were shrunk massively. The 50 cents went from 13.4 grams and 33mm to 6.5 grams and 26mm. The $1 coin was also issued, but this was only thinner, not smaller than the existing one. The $2 was still a note. |

Time for another jaunt around the world of my coin collection.   Starting in Canada, 2009 Vancouver games quarter with Ice skating?   20 sen from Malaysia   5 more Koruna from Czechia with the Charles Bridge And we finish up where East meets West   The large 1 Lira coin which was worth $1 when it was issued and now its like 5 cents due to inflation. Oddly there has not been a bigger circulation piece issued so far. More coins tomorrow. Expect to see a lot more Turkish, Greek and Communist coins from me as we head back in time. |
