Forced currency:
Unique among Muhammad Bin Tughluq's coinage was the "forced" token currency. It was modelled after the Chinese example, using brass or copper tokens, backed by the silver and gold kept in the treasury. Tughluq had two scalable versions, issued in Delhi and Daulatabad. The currency was issued in the two different standards, undoubtedly to follow the local standards which pre-existed in the North and in the South respectively. He engraved "He who obeys the Sultan obeys the compassionate" to fascinate people in accepting the new coinage. However, very few people exchanged their gold or silver coins for the new copper ones. Moreover, the tokens were easy to forge, which led to heavy losses, as Tughluq subsequently withdrew the forged currency by exchanging it for bullion coins. It is said that after the plan failed, there were heaps of copper coins lying around the royal offices for years. (Numista)

AH 730 - 1330 CE Dehli Sultans - six gani

How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go?-Seventh-Edition!

Many apologies. I had posted this coin believing it to be an AH 730 coin of Muhammad Bin Tughluq. However, the 7, being mostly off flan, didn't look quite right. A quick check of a 6 gani AH 713 shows that my coin is in fact a 713 of Ala al din Muhammad Khilji. I should have read the coin better, given the suspect 7. A rookie mistake on my behalf. Sadly I don't have a 730 (for now, so unless someone else is holding back, we may be at an impasse.)

Yep, bummer indeed. Pity EddieDiz isn't around anymore. I spotted a reasonably priced Mamluk 730, over your side of the world. but for some reason the seller couldn't sell to me.

Bummer.

Part of me is not too upset. I feel compelled to get a Ninth Edition running this year.
