Thank you for sharing. The crackly OGP looks rather compromised; allowing the environment to create this interesting toning.

First post, loooong-time collector - I have encountered this red toning for many years on '61 & '62 proof sets. The halves and quarters are red, the dimes are never. I have a combined dozen or two of the Franklins & Washingtons in my collection. A couple of the quarters are slabbed but the rest are raw. Some are in 2x2s and others in Danscos.

Here are links to the Washington TrueViews (which the majority of time I refer to as FauxView although in this instance the photos are accurate).

2 cents worth, I have seen coins that spent much time in fountains /underwater that look just like this.
The original plastic mint coin holder looks to be in very poor condition. Flood damaged?

As far as I can tell in the pictures and in my opinion, I have seen at least ten halves like this and dozens of quarters. From proof sets from the Franklin era.

It seems like Matt Proof has seen them too.

I personally think they are totally normal, undamaged, and not anomalous at all. Beautiful coins too.

Just my Two Cents as a non-expert.

Going through my quarters, this is the first I found that has what I consider to be the same type of toning. Some of the franklins are pumpkin orange on both sides.

Here is a half-red Jefferson of mine, also from a '61 proof set;

I used to dig through stacks of proof sets at the local coin shop, looking for toning I liked. It was an easy and inexpensive way (for my means and income, in my opinion) to get toned coins that would otherwise sometimes seem to be very expensive when purchasing by other methods. I got many dozens of nicely toned coins from plastic wrappers that looked undamaged to me and that appeared to be well taken care of.

Since I could only afford one or two sets at a time, I didn't buy all that many. But I had dozens of sets to choose from with toning that looks to me to be just like the orange Franklin shown above.

Not all were orange. Maybe 8-12 were orange. But all different colors even brown.

Hey, thank you everyone for all your replies. Real nice seeing your examples too. I'm relieved to know there's nothing abnormal of the color too. Sure are nice to look at.

My toned 61 has great eye appeal but hard to capture in a photograph.

Matt Proof — really like seeing so many reds and oranges in one place. Brings back memories of digging through proof sets. I have a feeling I'll be back looking through proof sets on my next day off to try to get more haha. If I end up doing this eventually, I'll post pics here.

I discovered that I did, in fact, have a red Roosie stashed away in a Library of Coins album and decided to create a red '61 proof set.
Here are quick 'n dirty photos of the same set taken at slightly different angles combined into one image. The Jefferson is half-red and I'm having a difficult time capturing that effect.
