Obverse: the letters ...EL...O (in ADELBERO) are visible Reverse: O++O in the corners of the cross; around is IMPERATOR , none of which visible on this example. A little rustic to be sure @tdz and thx for the mini-history lesson about the rulers of Friesland! Here is another 11th Century Denar from Friesland. It was minted at Dokkum.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

Since @spence has started the Bohemia parade, here is my only one from the 11th c., also Bretislaus I, struck 1050-1055 according to Numista, Cach #322:   Edited by tdziemia

Well just as you catch up to me Bohemia, I'm headed a bit south to Lucca Italy with this Denaro.  They were minted for a very long time (1039-1125 AD) and are available for relatively low prices, especially when poorly struck like mine (maybe this thread is going to inspire someone to jump into medieval silver coins!) For reference, this one set me back less than ten bucks, but that was a while ago. Right now on ma-shops, there are 28 of them available and range in price from about $16 up through $40. I think I had one of those - will have to check if I've got any pics... I did jump into medieval silver, but most of it was too expensive for me to bother with (I'm still a bit sad sometimes about missing out on two relatively affordable bracteates in 2013 - didn't want them the first time and they were gone when I showed up to the same store again a few months later), and when I finally started earning enough to afford some (in 2021/22), I had to escape Russia shortly afterwards and basically stopped collecting anything non-modern. |
