A friend of mine buys a lot of estate lots and pulls out the possible error coins. Every once in a while I go through his pile to let him know what the coins are. Last pile was the usual bunch of damage, minor clips and laminations, etc. But there were two decent struck through die caps and this one. Turns out it was an unlisted split die, so I sent it in and JC attributed it. It will likely be on it's way to ANACS at some point, but I just made a big submission and it'll be a while before I have enough to do another. Normally for a split die I would go with PCGS, but I'd rather like to get "DISCOVERY PC" on the label and ANACS will do that. 1972 D Jefferson nickel mint error - split die discovery piece SD-5c-1972D-03R Edited by tropicalbats 08/01/2026 12:18 am

Congrats on the coin and listing TB! I'll say it has some nice "eye patch" appeal

Thanks all! It's a good one and was surprised to see it in one of those usual collections of random minor stuff. Been getting a lot of stuff in but haven't been around to do postings and whatnot. A slightly more quiet summer than previous ones but still away a lot.

Definitely a neat error coin. That missing piece right over Monticello is eye catching, and the coin is in very nice condition.
