I have a lower Texas than my PO01 but alas it has no date. If it was the only one in a series I'd be just fine. :(

Quote: Are you up grading your high end commemoratives too? Yes ... in a special sort of way. There is only one coin in my MS type set where I am pursuing a grade upgrade ... searching for an MS65/MS66 Hawaiian with outstanding strike and brilliant original surfaces. That search might take a while. As I have gained knowledge of the series I have come to appreciate and value strike quality and surface condition (toning) as key elements to my personal satisfaction with the MS coins ... In that regard there are several of my MS commemorative that are due for 'upgrade' ... not a grade jump but simply examples that better please my eye and personal aesthetic. Here is a recent example of my MS set upgrades ... poor photography skills in no way show the tremendous visual power of this exceptionally hammered strike with original cartwheel luster. This is the absolute best strike Lincoln I have ever seen. Observe the eagle neck feathers ... each one is there and the coin glows from across a room. 1918 Illinois (Lincoln) Centennial Half DollarPCGS MS66+/CAC Just for fun ... here is my PCGS G06 example of the same coin: By my count I have 9 additional MS commemorative to 'upgrade' in this manner ... coins which must be viewed in hand and carefully selected. Great fun ... and the knowledge gained over the years with the CCF support has been invaluable. Enjoy the beautiful Lincolns ... Returning this thread back to my honestly circulated set. David

Congrats on the latest downgrades! I always enjoy seeing your circulated pieces, they're such an unexpected sight for a classic US commemorative coin! I remember the first time you posted your Lincoln. Liked it then, still like it now! Great coin! Look forward to seeing your next "up" or "down" grade!

I have to say that Lincoln definitely fits the eye appeal. The neck feathers are very catchy - it almost looks like the neck is stretching out...

As Lincoln wears so does his eye. He gets that hollowed look just like he did as he aged in office.

Writing to share an update on the then raw Pilgrim shown on the previous page ... I was convinced through experience with the circulated series this should grade an honest PO01. Alas the PCGS wizards disagree ... 1920 Pilgrim Tercentenary half dollar - PCGS FR02 I'm kind of disappointed with the wizards judgment ... I've truly overpaid for a trivial 1 grade point downgrade from my previous PCGS AG03 example. That said ... I have come to be at peace with the vagaries of chasing such a difficult set at this ... truly enjoying every day of the hunt for these tremendous coins in honest circulated state. Enjoy David

I agree that this should be a PO01. I had the same experience with mine. If these were Morgan dollars they "would" be PO01!

I am by no means well versed in Lowball grades (especially this series) but your coin does merit a PO01 IMO. It has less meat than Not Mint to Be's FR02.

Great pilgrim David! Any pics of the reverse? The pilgrim reverse is one of my favorite designs. The pilgrim coin in general is one of my favorites in the series.

Technically the 1925 Norse-American Medal is not a member of the circulated classic commemorative series. That said ... many collectors of the series include at least one of the various Norse medals in their collection ... acknowledgment that this is a US Mint issued medal fitting the general theme of the classic commemorative time period. My long search for an honestly 'circulated' example has led me to the following Norse medal ... 1925 Norse Medal (thick) ... FR02/AG03 Consider that this medal has no denomination as circulating legal tender ... and that the prior stewards chose to use this as a special pocket piece ... and now amazingly in my set. Such is the great joy of pursuing this set ... coins which could speak volumes about our history while also serving our nation ... albeit the Norse shown above never purchased anything except joy for the original owner(s) and me. Enjoy David

That is a very night pocket piece, a wonderful addition to your "circulated" set.

Writing to share a few new coins in my quest to complete the 50-coin circulated silver commemorative type set ... 1938 New Rochelle (NY) 250th Anniversary Half DollarVery difficult coin to find in any circulated state ... this example is graded PCGS AU55. IMHO the coin is over-graded ... but nonetheless pleased to add this example to my low-ball set. Now down to 2 holes in the set. This coin is once again raw and on it's way to the PCGS wizards for an second opinion. 1936 Arkansas Robinson Half DollarPurchased raw and likely AU55 or so ... lustrous surfaces with slight circulation wear. Another very difficult coin to obtain in circulated state ... this example is on it's way to the wizards for their view ... I say AU55. This example (if certified) would leave me with one final hole in my circulated commemorative type set. 1921 Missouri Centennial Half DollarTruly a low-ball classic silver commemorative. I judge to be FR02 despite the hairlines evident in the photos and in hand ... believe they are a result of time in a pocket and circulation use. PCGS wizards will offer their opinion ... Truly enjoying the hunt for these special coins which were not intended to circulate ... as such the numismatic challenge brings me great joy. Hopeful you enjoy my latest additions. David

Very nice additions! The Missouri Centennial is an excellent low-ball.
