So we probably average a few damaged coins like this a month on the forum. They are damaged by old time hand crank gumball machines. Consistently on the last digit of the date and moved in the same direction on Lincoln cents.
If you have observed, nearly all of the dates you encounter in this manner will correspond to the gumball machine era years.
