Well I've only found 5 1972's so far. And of course don't have '85 or '86 cause they only came in mint sets.
Still only half way through, I might do the rest tonight after work. Yes that's right I will spend my Sat night looking through coins - lucky I don't have a social life :)

No MSO coins amongst them.  I don't think I've ever found any MSO 5c's in the wild.  life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

Nancy and Ingine,
Do not completely write off the chance of finding any 85 or 86 5c.
I thought that I the chance would be virtually zero, but I have found an 86 5c!

To be fair Mobofroos,the 5's I had been collecting in a tin for a few years. It's not that I went and bought a $40 bag and found them all at once :) By the way, how much is a 1972 5c worth these days? I see in 2004 it was worth $30 UNC. Obviously mine are very circulated.
Funny you say about the lotto ticket - I was just saying to a friend how I have had more 'wins' searching coins than I ever have playing lotto! And I gotta say it's much more fun doing coins too :)
Now to find an 85 or 86 (thanks for the tip ozcoins)!

Ahhh, just worked out what MSO stands for... has me scratching my head for a few minutes...
maybe a mod will see this and add it to the glossary...

I had a bit of a think about finding 85 and 86 5 cent coins, and think the chances are actually very remote - even though I have found one.
There were 170,000 1985 uncirculated sets and 180,000 1986 uncirculated sets.
Total for both years is 350,000
This is just a guess, but I would be surprised if even 5% get opened and put into circulation, which would be 17,500 coins.
Compare that with the "scarce" 1972 at 8,300,000 and I can hardly believe I found one at all....

yep, ozcoins beat me to the punch... Mint Set Only.
refers to a coin that was not issued for general circulation, but was issued in mint sets.

It is possible that MSO coins will appear in circulation as over the years I have found quite a few, but mostly $1 & 50c.
I have also found some proof coins in circulation, and Proof Set numbers are usually a lot less than Mint Sets so anything is possible.

Yep, I have found a couple of MSO / NCLT $1 coins over the years in circulation (haven't been lucky enough to find any 50c yet... go Nancy!), and a few months ago I saw 1989 silver proof 50c from a masterpieces set advertised on ebay as a "super shiny 50c" found in circulation... go figure? I suspected that it was stolen and the new "owner" didn't realize what it was - a simple google search would have shown that a cook 50c from 1989 was silver, but there you go. Just tried to search for the closed listing and couldn't find it, I think from memory it sold for around $10. Maybe AustralianCoin or one of the of the other ebay guru members can locate it... (note I used my new knowledge with the term MSO - thanks again Nancy!) |
