Think you're a little high on where the 'S' should be.

I agree, it looks like part of the outer pattern of the star and it is way too high...

We all agree that Bonedigger's quarter is a 1927, right? The coin posted by Vaslin is the key date 1923-S which is valuable even with most of the date missing.

Given that it is a 1927, I was all ready to say it doesn't matter whether a poor-condition 1927 quarter has a mint mark since they would all be worth close to melt. Then I took out the latest Coin Market magazine and I see the '27-D is valued at $14 in Good while the S is $35. Coins that I assumed were junk silver don't look so junky at today's prices!

I'll bet the '27-S was less pricy when dealer JH Cline decided to roll out this quarter to create a business card:
