Today I will write my one monthly check-----to my gardener who doesn't accept Venmo or Zelle. I've asked. Repeatedly.
Growing up I used to watch my mom spend time balancing hdr checkbook. One time I asked her if she ever caught the bank making a mistake. She said that once the bank shorted her a dime.

I wrote my last check around 2004-ish. I had an old book, but it was two bank mergers out of date.

Unfortunately, due to some members of my family and friends being anti-technological, I recently had to order a new book of checks. I will probably end up writing one or zero per year. So annoying! >.<

I almost opted for a post office money order instead, but I figure this will keep happening with geriatric people for many years to come. Otherwise, checks are a cumbersome form of money that presents a convenient way that identity thieves can steal your signature and banking information. They should just go away. Sadly, many older people believe that checks are much more secure than credit cards and apps.

My last three checks were for home maintenance and repairs; the vendors (Painter / Plumber / HVAC) either weren't set up for Zelle / Venmo or they charged more for using a CC.
I still record my spends in a paper check register.
Thank you for sharing the article, jbuck.

Contractors are a fair point. Many are starting to pass the credit card fee along to their clients.

I think I quality as 'older', now.
But, I've been using online banking since the days of dial-up modems, and happily dropped the checkbook when I was around half my current age of 72.
I was employed by a printing company that produced brochures for my Credit Union, announcing their new service of online banking. I went home and registered the same day, before the brochures even hit the street, LOL.

Far from being a technophobe, like many in my age group, I've been playing with computers for going on 50 years. One caveat, I am a mobile phone refusnik. Though, my home phone is VoIP, and has been since around 2010.
And I am learning that not too many people (of any age) are even familiar with that.

Not all of us old farts shun technology.

Funny. My check book has the address of the house I lived in before I was married and the CU name has changed twice since. I believe they were printed in 1999. The few times I used it after I moved I manually wrote my new address as needed.

I have used the same companies long enough that I was comfortable setting up ACH in their payment portal when they added feeds for using credit/debit.

Same, except, well, I am 56.

My first exposure to computers was the Apple ][ in grade school. My first home computer was the Sinclair ZX-81. My first modem was 300 baud and used pulse dialing. How things have changed.

It is all I have had since I dropped the landline in 2008. I actually quit making landline calls before then. I only had it for the security system and I got a new panel with a cellular modem in 2008.

I have a Polycom phone at home for work. It has a DID, so it might as well be a landline. I use the DID number when sites/companies require a secondary number since the mobile is technically my home phone.

Telecom is the original and once primary business of my employer of 29+ years. We have expanded into many other things, but the Telecom is a huge part of a 46 year history.

I'm afraid my grade school years predate personal computers. Even in high school, the school didn't even have a computer anywhere on campus.
But, we had mimeograph machines, overhead projectors, open reel tape recorders, and 16mm sound movie projectors! The schools weren't even air conditioned, hard as that seems nowadays.

My first computer was the TRS-80 that I built from a Radio Shack kit. I haven't had a landline this Century, but we're not going to talk about my the suitcase brick mobile phone from the Jurassic Era that I had back in the day. I've also been completely paperless for my coin dealing and personal collecting since before the turn of the Century. (I do have 45+ TB of digital records and photos, however. Yes. I'm a digital hoarder.) I haven't sent an email this year. And I still have $3 left from the $20 bill I had in my wallet at the start of the pandemic. Like several others here, I have used checks for home remodeling, mainly because my much younger Luddite accountant threatened to remove some of my innards if I didn't. Other than that, I'm still on my last checkbook from the very early 2000s.

Those lingered through the 70s and into the 80s.

I moved quit a bit as a kid, so I managed to suffer a few of those as along the way. However, HVAC systems seemed to be the norm by the time I graduated.

Just mailed, a few days ago, two cheques to our snow removal company for winter 2026-2027. Previously, in the spring, two to our grass cutting company. Don't like emailing my credit or debit card info. to anyone. Use between 15-20 cheques a year. .

I agree with you, Sharks.
I write three or four checks each month to pay utility bills. It's not that big of a deal to me.

We're definitely outliers of our millennial generation, but my wife and I write multiple checks per month: church giving, utilities, and contractors. Mostly because it's the only way to avoid credit card fees. Some local contractors don't even accept cards.
