A lot of people are completely put off by the exorbitant pricing. This set is probably going to run around $3k.

Yeah, speaking for myself, availability of funds for numismatic adventures is quite limited at the moment.

This is old news! They released those exact coins in 2016. Couldn't they have picked other coins? I already have a 2016 gold Mercury dime, I don't need a 2026 gold Mercury dime that costs twice as much as my 2016.

I might be wrong about this, but I seem to recollect that the subjects for this year's "Best of the Mint" coins were arrived at via a public poll. I remember being surprised at the results because I, as well, thought, "Didn't we just do this not that long ago?"
The coin I'd really like to see reproduced is the 1915 $50 Pan-Pacific octagonal, but I've never seen anyone express a similar sentiment.
How about a gold version of the 1955 doubled die? They could charge double the price of gold for that one!

I tried a similar thread a week or so ago. The dime only has 8 sets for sale right now. It has been coming and going since it was released. The standing liberty hasn't sold well at all. I doubt the walking this week does very well either. Price is the big factor. I'm not sure why we did them these all again after just a few years. The medals on their own would have done really well. I like the series but the price is going to get big really fast now.

I would have bought them if I could get them without the gold coins.

How cool would modern versions of the $2.50, $5 and $10 Indians have been rather than the re-makes of 2016?

I like the idea immediately above. I would also support a redo of the $20 Liberty gold. I especially like the design on the reverse. I know this is blasphemous, but in many ways I prefer it to the St. Gauden's version, probably because the St. Gaudens coin has been done to death, so I've seen it so much, or I'm just a contrarian.

Very.

I still could not afford them, but they would be more appealing to me if I could, and had already bought the 2016 examples.

Is this a testament as to the popularity (or lack thereof) of this series?

IMO, the 2016 gold replica coins were an interesting novelty. The 2026 issues strike me as a 'collectible' gimmick struck for high-end modern coin collectors. They don't draw my interest.

At about 2.4 ounces of gold, a faithful repro of the original 1915 $50 Panama-Pacific International Exposition coin(s) would likely carry a very strong issue price!

The medals are much more intersting to me. I'm with others who wish the Mint would release them separately.

I picked up the dime and quarter sets because of the Medals. I'm on the fence with the half dollar, just not feeling the love for the "karate chopping" Lady Liberty... although the reverse does look nice.

I would have bought them if I could get them without the gold coins.

This goes against one of the Mint's marketing paradigms, which is "medals don't sell, coins do." A logical corollary of this would therefore be "If you want to sell a medal, you need to pair it with a coin". Which is great in theory, except when the coin is gold, and thus so expensive that only a tiny minority of the potential customer base can afford it.

I'm sure they would have sold a lot more coin-and-medal sets if the "coin" had been a bronze replica of a Wheat penny. Or even, I don't know, an actual silver dime, perhaps?

Quote:
I'm sure that the mint has some convoluted reasoning for why they felt the need to rehash rare coins from our past...

The reasoning here is quite simple: the Mint is giving people what it thinks they want.

For years, people have been saying to the Mint, though coin forums such as this one, sentiments such as "we hate the dead presidents, give us back the classic Liberty coin designs". This, combined with some actual comparative sales data (such as the fact that the best-selling and highest-demand coins in the gold "President's Wives" series were the coins from unmarried presidents that featured classic Liberty heads instead of the coins depicting actual women) all combine to send a clear, coherent message to the Mint's marketing gurus: "US coin collectors want the Mint to make replicas of the classic coin designs".

So that's what they're doing. And they're going to keep doing it, until another message is sent or the magic stops working and people stop buying them.

This is always the problem when anybody tries to "give people what they say they want". Sometimes, "what they say they want" is not what they actually want. And sometimes, "what they want" is impossible so they try to substitute something similar, but "almost-what-they-want" doesn't quite cut it.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
