told me it was a washer

Perhaps in between being used as a coin and finding its way into the bargain bin, it spent some time as a washer.

More likely that than in a washing machine, which is honestly what the edge looks like

Can I post a link to the pcgs page I was referencing here?

You're very close, it's a 48-g for sure. 48 is the obverse die, g is the reverse die with a lower case g, upper case G is a totally different die.

While there are some no-no websites for which we don't permit links, I'm pretty sure that PCGS is fine. Give it a try!

I think I'll call it "Holey Toast, Batman!"

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I'll post the pcgs link when I'm home from work for reference.

You just have to love the New Jersey coppers! I got my first one as a young teenager in the early 70's, a 1788 67-v, I still have it!

lcutler, admittedly, I was unfamiliar with the type before finding this one. I've yet to see one at any shows, either. They certainly are a fascinating piece of history!

Very nice that you've managed to hold on to yours

I do not know the varieties but I do see an outline on the shield on yours so there is that. haha Nice find for sure. I had a Nova Constellatio that was like yours You could juust make out the rays and eye.

At one point I was starting to collect New Jersey coppers by die variety but it just became too costly. I ended up trying to get most of the major types, I have about thirty I believe.
