1943 Copper Lincoln - Coin Community Forum

Dino Valued Member United States 180 Posts	Posted 08/03/2014 5:44 pm Was approached about buying a 1943 Copper Lincoln Cent, told the seller it would need to be appraised by a TPG, haven't heard back from seller yet. So quite likely a fake, but it occurred to me that I've never seen a plated/re-plated coin; would there be obvious signs? Report this Post to the Staff

CoinCollector2012 Pillar of the Community United States 8137 Posts	Posted 08/03/2014 8:24 pm Most o the fakes for these are steelies plated in copper. If you take a magnet and put it over the coin, then it will either stick (if it does then it will be fake) and if it does not, then it belong in a TPG holder. Also, if this seller has any knowledge about coins, he would have it in a holder. It kind of makes you wonder why he is selling it raw... Report this Post to the Staff

Pulled the last HA sale and told him what it went for and got the impression he wasn't too surprised, which only increased my doubts. Should I get a followup I'll post what I find out. Finn235 Pillar of the Community United States 6130 Posts	Posted 08/04/2014 4:46 pm Most I know of are either copper plated genuine 1943 or a 1948 with half of the 8 scraped off--both easy to detect. A more sophisticated method would be to punch a copper blank using a fabricated die--expensive to make, but it would require an expert to properly identify. Report this Post to the Staff
