Bought it from a reputable dealer, or so I think. Two things: 1.) Think its legitimate? 2.) Whats the grade/value?   Edited by Pytellc

While the mirrors and strike quality call out "souvenir re-strike", it is similar to BG-1026. Here's a genuine piece in MS63 which is a Pop 6/1. Only one piece has ever been graded finer than this piece. http://coins.ha.com/itm/california-...Lot=1x=0&y=0P.S. If it were a legit BG-1026 piece in that condition we're talking a $1,000+ value. BG-1026 is the closest match I can find and the reverse of yours has 2 extra berries that I see. Can you carefully weigh it and mic the diameter?

It's actually not in my possession, should be here soon. Next week probably. What weight and diameter should I be looking for?
This is what the seller provided as the BG number: BG-1332A
Thanks for the info by the way!
I've compared both reverses and I notice they both have the first L slightly higher than the second, hopefully that's a good sign.

I'm not saying this isn't a reputable seller but that variety is not listed anywhere except their website which leads me to believe it is a re-strike and not a period piece.

I am not saying it isn't a genuine piece but it appears as if it's been listed on their website for 5+ years and is an unknown issue that they attributed themselves. If it were a genuine piece in that condition one would assume they would have it slabbed and for sale at 5X the asking price. Disclaimer: I am about as far from being a California Fractional Gold expert as is possible. All my comments are based only on my opinion. |
