Friday last week I purchased 9 coins from another detectorist who was lucky enough to find them while he was out searching in Dorset. They arrived Yesterday.
He posted pictures of the hoard in a group on facebook saying he was thinking of selling the coins. I thought it would be rude not to make an offer
The coins are from the Durotriges Tribe, PAS DOR-2D6235 is the recorded Number for the hoard. Durotriges were more a tribal confederation than a Tribe. They were one of the groups that issued coinage before the Roman conquest.
I thought I would just share one of them with you all as not much Celtic stuff gets posted.
Met.

Very nice, but can you read a year or what it says on it?

Great pick-up and you are right that Celtic coins are not posted here nearly often enough. Are all 9 coins of the same type?

Hi Spence.
The coins are all similar type, a few with a slightly different reverse but they are all ABC 2157 to 2169. (Ancient British Coins Book).

The coin I have posted doesn't carry a date on it, it is imagery on these Celtic coins.

'Four branch Billon stater. Wreath, cloak and crescents, four branched objects above (slightly off flan). Two pellets above curve of spike.'
There are also 3 branch and 2 branch types.
It is from the Durotriges 'Tribe' and is what you would call Mainstream series, Circa 60BC - AD45.

When I have cleaned the others I will post a few more

That one is pretty nice MD, these are really interesting coins. I picked up one over a decade ago somewhere along the way. It has the "thunderbolt" reverse and it has a faint "bump" in the obverse, that is it. I thought it was heavily worn but I guess that all pretty much look like this.

Nice coin that chrsmat71.
That type of pattern is called Finney's Thunderbolt. Named after Ian Finney who's thunderbolt coin was the first to be published. I've seen it on gold quarter Staters before but not on silver.
The one's I have are going to auction, apart from one that I really like.
