greeniejim Valued Member Ireland 215 Posts	Posted 11/26/2009 1:17 pm Thought I would share this one with you, I was given it yesterday, so it cost me nothing, I noticed the over stamping on the legend on both sides and possibly a broken die at DG on the Obverse as illustrated below. I believe it is Spink 2562. If anyone has anything further to add........please do. Report this Post to the Staff

svslav Pillar of the Community United States 2605 Posts	Posted 11/29/2009 10:05 pm Can you make out a mintmark (above 66, or before Elizabeth))? According to my book for 1566 there should be one of the two MM's: portcullis or lion. That is for hammered coins. I'm having hard time seeing either. Report this Post to the Staff
greeniejim Valued Member Ireland 215 Posts	Posted 12/01/2009 7:06 pm Looking at the coin under a loop, The Obverse looks like a wee kitten, and the REV looks like a T-REX........... I zoomed in a bit and highlighted what can be seen of the MM. At first I thought the REV was a Portcullis, and the OB was a Lion, but I dont know if this variety was ever hammered. You can also see from the new pics better detail on the Mis-hammered letters on the legend. Report this Post to the Staff
svslav Pillar of the Community United States 2605 Posts	Posted 12/01/2009 10:10 pm I've seen the portcullis MM, it looked fairly square. The lion one I haven't encountered yet, so I have no idea how it looks. I doubt about having different MM's on the reverse and the obverse, but one never knows - your coin is "wacky" enough... At this point I'm leaning toward the idea that the "wee kitten" and the "T-REX" are the remains of a lion, which was used as a mintmark in 1566 - 67 on Elizabethan hammered coins.
