pordy New Member United States 18 Posts	Posted 09/25/2007 9:12 pm I've sorted through about 2000 world coins in the past month and this is the second of two that I haven't been able to track down the country (the first was already IDd by Sap- much thanks!). Ideas? Also, thanks for the KM# info- I've already ordered a used copy! Oh, its about 12mm, light, of cheap material- about .5 grams. Just found several Ethiopia coins on ebay with similar lion (my KM catalog until the real one comes :) I'm used to (maybe older?) Ethiopia coins having the crowned lion. Thanks! Sap Moderator Australia 16887 Posts	Posted 09/26/2007 01:40 am This coin is definitely Ethiopian, but it's from the Socialist Republic, not from the monarchy; that's why the usual crowned Lion of Judah is absent. The date on it (in Ethiopian numerals) is certainly 1969, but Ethiopia uses a slightly different calendar, which is eight years behind ours; Ethiopian Era 1969 was 1977, after Emperor Haile Selassie was ousted in a Marxist revolution. The Ethiopian calendar was in the news recently; they've only just had their Year 2000 celebrations over there. quote: arthrene asked: I need someone to explain the KM#s to me too.
